Preschool philosophy
The statement of philosophy reflects the beliefs and values of our preschool. It assists educators in considering our approach to learning, development and wellbeing. It underpins our procedures and guides all aspects of our operations and practices.
Gulyangarri Public Preschool is built on the lands of the Cabrogal Clan. The word Gulyangarri comes from the Darug language spoken by the Cabrogal Clan and translates to “children” in English. This name was chosen to reflect the importance of children being at the centre of all that we do. Gulyangarri Public Preschool is a place of belonging for all children.
We believe education has the power to transform lives by creating opportunities for children to develop their sense of identity and understanding of their world. Recognising children as strong, capable, and competent individuals, we actively support them in shaping these through their diverse family and community experiences.
We recognise each family as children’s first and most important teachers. We strive to build and maintain respectful, responsive, and reciprocal relationships with families, working alongside them and our wider community. We value the rich diversity of the Liverpool community and honour the cultures, languages, and traditions each child and family brings, recognising their vital contribution to multicultural Australia and our preschool community.
We bring cultural and religious celebrations and awareness into our program, enriching children’s understanding and appreciation of diverse traditions while fostering respect and belonging. Our program’s responsiveness to children’s voices and decisions reflects our belief in children’s agency, their right and ability to make choices, express interests, and use their strengths to actively guide their learning each day. Through this approach, we create opportunities for children to develop independence, confidence, self-esteem, resilience, responsibility, social competence, and the ability to build meaningful relationships, thereby supporting them in reaching their full potential.
Our educators foster each child’s holistic development through responsive guidance and intentional scaffolding. By closely observing and listening, they extend children’s learning and tailor experiences to each child’s interests, strengths, and needs. Working collaboratively, educators draw on their expertise, knowledge, and experience to create an inclusive and enriching environment that cultivates each child’s sense of Belonging, supports their Being, and encourages their Becoming as confident and capable learners.
